Quantification of emissions of non-CO2 greenhouse gases and their precursors using inverse modelling
Quantification of emissions of non-CO2 greenhouse gases and their precursors using inverse modelling
The main objective of the project is to define a methodology and to develop the tools in order to quantify the surface emissions of methane and of ozone precursors such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide at the global and regionallevels, using the entire set of atmospheric observations available and in particular satellite data.
The techniques developed for CO2 (within the framework of the associated CARBO-CONTROLE project) will initially be employed for carbon monoxide. At the same time, the adjoint of the chemical/transport model MOZART used in the project was developed, which led the authors to devise variational inversion methods that allowed a more thorough inclusion of the non-linear processes that determine the distribution of chemically active short-lived chemical species such as ozone precursors.
