This project deals with the analysis of two dimensions of international negotiations on climate change: thegame interplay of coalitions and the issues at stake in terms of equity.
Regarding the first, the particularity of the project lies in the fact that it being is focused on the dynamics of coalitions during the negotiation process rather than on their sole result. A two-step progression is hypothesized, as states first settle into different groups, which then negotiate the global agreement.
This theoretical process is to will then be confronted with the behaviours observed in the actual negotiations. Equity issues will be treated extensively, through examining the relationship between the criteria brought to the fore in the negotiations and the major theoretical approaches of justice, and the relationships between equity and the acceptability of agreements. Existing interactions beween the various ways of applying the criteria (onto commitments made or on delivery) and the weight given to equity considerations in comparison relation to an agreement’s efficiency or feasability will also be studied. The occurrence of links between equity considerations and the dynamics of coalitions and actual negotiations will be analysed. These various points have been studied in a normative and positive way, and have given rise to several experiments.
